China Outlet Destinations

Outlet shopping in mainland China is newer and smaller in scale than in Europe, but it is growing. Suzhou Village, near Shanghai, opened in May 2014 and is now undergoing a Phase 3 expansion, adding roughly 10,000 square metres and 57 boutiques, due to open in 2026; its sister site, Shanghai Village, opened in 2016, and both belong to the wider Bicester Collection network of luxury outlet villages. Shopping there also got easier for overseas visitors in 2025: since April that year, China has run a refund-upon-purchase departure tax scheme, letting eligible foreign tourists claim VAT rebates on the spot rather than at the airport, with the minimum qualifying purchase lowered to 200 yuan (about $28) per store per day. Payment is worth checking store by store, since many outlets lean on Alipay and WeChat Pay rather than card terminals.
